James Mickelson

James Mickelson

I’m James Mickelson, a working cowboy on a commercial cow/calf ranch in Wyoming. I’m married with a 4-year-old son and a 5-month-old baby girl.

What’s going through your head as you lay in bed the night before … a hunt, a fishing trip, a ride?:

Before a big ride/move, I’m usually thinking about what horse I'm going to ride, and if he/she will be my best choice for that job. I’m also thinking about my plan on how to execute the gathering most efficiently.

What motivates you to do what you do?:

Being able to spend more time with and raise my children on a working ranch. I thrive on knowing I’m waking up every morning and doing something productive with my time.

How do you step your game up year after year?:

Usually, I pick two or three skills for the year that I want to really focus on improving, and spend my extra time working on them. For example, this year I wanted to better my roping techniques.

What would you identify as a quality you possess that makes you stand out amongst your peers?:

I would say my curiosity and the want to learn new skills. Some of my peers prefer to stay in their comfort zones, and I feel as if I'm more successful when I'm outside of my comfort zone.

If you could improve one aspect of what you do, what would it be and why?:

My horsemanship. Bettering myself means my horse will in return be better, which makes the overall job easier for both of us.

If you could only listen to one music album the rest of your life, what would it be?:

Ryan Bingham - Mescalito

Past, present, or future: who is one person you would sit down with for a full course meal and why?:

My future great-grandchildren and family beyond that. I would think they would enjoy hearing stories of my work and my families life on the ranch.

Is a hotdog a sandwich?:

Yes!

Who has had the biggest influence on your life and why?:

God and my family. They are the most important people in my life, so I make sure they are involved in every big decision I make.

What is your most favorite smell?:

Sagebrush after it rains

What is the best book you have read?:

Lonesome Dove

Would you rather be the smartest person or the funniest person?:

Funniest person, because everyone enjoys humor!

Your go to favorite meal?:

Rib eye steak & potatoes

How would you explain what Canvas Cutter represents?:

I believe Canvas Cutter represents not only the everyday hunters, campers, and ranchers in their respective industries but also the die-hards. Canvas Cutter understands the needs of their customers and creates products that stand the wear and tear of life.

What is your favorite Canvas Cutter product and why?:

Cantle bag for sure. I’m able to keep all the smaller stuff in one spot and out of the elements.

What is something people would never guess just by looking at you?:

That I didn’t grow up ranching or had any major influence of cowboys in my life early on. I have ridden horses since 13 but didn’t make a full-time career out of it until my early 20s.
