But this about where the similarities end....

Although Canvas Cutter bedrolls and bivvies each act as a protective cover for your sleeping bag and pad, the amount of protection they provide differs greatly.

Most bivvies are open ended at the head allowing dirt, dust, bugs, and rain to still find its way into your sleeping bag. Many bivvies are made to provide protection from only one of the aspects previously listed. Some come with a waterproof bottom but the rest of the bivy is made of mesh netting, protecting you from bugs. This mesh netting defeats the purpose of having a waterproof bottom as you will still get wet when it rains.

Bivvies are often made for backpacking and casual camping. Because of this the fabric they are made from is usually thin and light. This is optimal for backpacking but can have its drawbacks. This fabric is more susceptible to tearing or having holes rubbed through it.

With a weight of 7lb Canvas Cutter bedrolls aren’t ideal for most backpackers, but that’s not exactly what they were made for. They were made to last and handle the cruelest conditions of the outdoors. Canvas Cutter bedrolls are made for 13oz Marine Boat shrunk Canvas—which is 29% stronger than regular canvas—Canvas Cutter bedrolls can take some major abuse. They will not tare easily or wear through easily. 

Another very important difference between bivvies and Canvas Cutters bedrolls is the breathability of the fabric they are made of.

Traditionally bivvies have been known to struggle with breathability and condensation build up. Although they have come a long way, most bivvies - even those with more breathable nylon or gore-tex fabrics - struggle with condensation.

Canvas Cutter bedrolls dominate at breathability. Canvas has been known for a very long time as a fabric that breaths exceptionally well. The marine boat shrunk canvas used to make Canvas Cutter bedrolls has many benefits besides its exceptional water proofing abilities. It is lighter than regular canvas, and much stronger, but it also does an excellent job at retaining heat while at the same time allowing unnecessary heat and moisture to escape. It would take an incredible amount of humidity and dramatic temperature changes in order for condensation to build up within the Canvas Cutter bedroll.

Zippers

Some bivvies have zippers, but if they do, they wear out quickly, break, jam, and tare easily.

A significant difference between Canvas Cutter bedrolls and bivvies is the simple fact that you cannot keep your gear stored in bivvies.

A bivvy, as mentioned above, acts as a protective shell for your sleeping bag and pad. You slide your sleeping gear into them once you have arrived at your camping destination, and when you leave you must remove your gear from them. Many bivvies are in reality a small tent, that take time to set-up and take down.
